The Scientific Computing Group is looking for an experienced Research/Staff Scientist to join the Computational Research Division (CRD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) to participate in a research project to investigate climate changes. We invite all qualified applicants to apply for this opportunity where you can carry out original research in extreme weather events and climate changes. In collaboration with climate scientists in CRD, as well as the Earth Sciences Division at LBNL, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms response for extreme weather events. Statistical analysis of observed extreme weather would be compared to climate model simulations of the past and the future to ascertain and improve the credibility of extreme weather projections under climate change scenarios. Options to develop one's own independent line of research will be especially encouraged. The analysis will be performed at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at LBNL. The successful candidate would also collaborate with fellow investigators at other DOE National Laboratories, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, UC Berkeley, and other partner universities.
Qualifications for Research Scientist
- PhD degree or equivalent experience in atmospheric science, physics, applied mathematics or a related technical field.
- Have expertise in terrestrial and/or atmospheric climate processes.
- Have expertise in the application of statistics to the geophysical sciences.
- Demonstrated proficiencies in the application of statistics to improve models of the earth's climate.
- Be competent to simulate and analyze the future economic and climatic consequences of climate change.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Interest in contributing to an active intellectual environment. Experience in climate data analysis, statistical analysis, and computer programming is highly preferred.
- Post-doctoral experience is highly preferred.
The career-track appointment will be a one year appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs. The career appointment requires at least three years experience post-Ph.D. or equivalent with demonstrated ability to individually carry out creative research within an established framework.
In addition to the qualifications listed above, the Staff Scientist will have the additional qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects and to coordinate research and development.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
- A proven record of peer reviewed scientific publications.
The career-track appointment will be a one year appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs. The career appointment requires at least five years experience post-Ph.D. or equivalent including recognized technical expertise and demonstrated ability to play a leadership role.
