The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA has two temporary appointments available for experienced Research Associates. Will design and conduct scientific experiments with a focus on new sequencing technologies and their application to address a wide range of outstanding questions in biology. Will work within the Genomic Technologies Department including: evaluating, validating and optimizing next generation sequencing technologies, developing molecular biology approaches for overall sequencing technology improvement, and developing new genomic applications utilizing these new technologies. Will troubleshoot research protocols and process and throughput issues as well as fulfill basic data analysis requests. Will carry out molecular biology experiments for various genomics-based projects and interact with JGI collaborators to develop genomics applications tailored to their research needs. May provide guidance and technical training to Research Associates and Students. Position reports to Genomic Technologies R&D Head.

Specific Job Duties
Essential - - Evaluate, validate and optimize next generation sequencing technologies. - Develop genomics applications utilizing new sequencing technologies. - Develop molecular biology approaches and genomics applications for overall sequencing technology improvement. - Carry out customized molecular biology experiments for various genomic-based research programs and collaborative research efforts. - Work with JGI Production Department and Vendors to troubleshoot process and throughput issues. - Generate reports and present findings within and outside the JGI and contribute to scientific research papers. - Keep detailed and accurate records of experiments performed and develop Standard Operating Procedures. - Work with informatics groups, programmers and analyst to complete basic data analysis requests.
Marginal - - Provide guidance and technical training to other team members as necessary. - Participate in discussions and present research data and experimental designs in regular group meetings
Key Success Factors
Essential - - Bachelor's Degree in molecular biology or a closely related discipline preferred, and two to five years of relevant research experience with increasing responsibility, or an MS Degree. - Broad knowledge and experience with DNA and RNA manipulation. - Experience with next-generation sequencing technology including Illumina / 454. - Demonstrated experience developing and implementing new laboratory methods and technologies. - Experience developing and updating standard operating procedures. - Demonstrated ability to conduct collaborative research-oriented tasks and effectively interact within a multi-disciplinary team. - Detail oriented with excellent analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills. - Strong organizational and record-keeping skills. - Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of related sequence analysis software programs and laboratory databases.
Marginal - - Bachelor's Degree in molecular biology or closely related discipline. - Experience in microbiology, Fungus, plant and metagenomics research. - Experience providing technical training and technology transfer.
