Job Title:Materials Postdoctoral Fellow - Nanocrystal Surface Chemistry Project
Req Number:23697
Division:Materials Sciences
Department:Molecular Foundry

The Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is recruiting four postdoctoral researchers to help initiate a new coordinated research program to unify our understanding of the surface chemistry and physics of inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals. Postdoctoral researchers will work together with a cross-disciplinary team of materials scientists, chemists and physicists to elucidate the fundamental aspects of surface bonding by small molecules, create new chemical mechanisms for strict control of surface-ligand interactions, and quantify the impact of surface chemistry on the optical and electronic properties of nanocrystals. Researchers will be expected to complement one another's skills and expertise to formulate a comprehensive understanding of nanoparticle surfaces. This foundational knowledge will empower us to manipulate nanocrystal properties and characterize their ensemble interactions with the environment in diverse energy-related applications currently under investigation at the Molecular Foundry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform quantitative analysis of surface chemical structure and dynamics and investigate the impact of surface properties on optical and electronic characteristics of nanocrystals and their macroscopic assemblies.
  • Advanced application of some of the following materials characterization methods to semiconductor nanocrystal-ligand complexes, with quantitative interpretation: nuclear magnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, Raman and optical absorption/emission.
  • Work collaboratively, reporting results internally to fellow researchers through monthly meetings and externally through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications
  • Recent Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related field with an emphasis on physical chemistry of materials.
  • Critical analysis and communication skills should be demonstrated through research publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • In addition to strong laboratory experience in related research, the successful candidates should have demonstrated ability to work in a cross-disciplinary team and to communicate ideas and results effectively.
