The Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is recruiting four postdoctoral researchers to help initiate a new coordinated research program to unify our understanding of the surface chemistry and physics of inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals. Postdoctoral researchers will work together with a cross-disciplinary team of materials scientists, chemists and physicists to elucidate the fundamental aspects of surface bonding by small molecules, create new chemical mechanisms for strict control of surface-ligand interactions, and quantify the impact of surface chemistry on the optical and electronic properties of nanocrystals. Researchers will be expected to complement one another's skills and expertise to formulate a comprehensive understanding of nanoparticle surfaces. This foundational knowledge will empower us to manipulate nanocrystal properties and characterize their ensemble interactions with the environment in diverse energy-related applications currently under investigation at the Molecular Foundry.
Key Responsibilities
- Characterize colloidal semiconductor nanocrystal surface chemistry, structure, optical and electronic properties, at both the single-particle and ensemble level.
- Apply advanced knowledge of electron microscopy and x-ray spectroscopic methods.
- Develop, apply and interpret results of advanced physical measurement techniques.
- Work collaboratively, reporting results internally to fellow researchers and externally through monthly meetings, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
Qualifications
- Recent Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related field with an emphasis in surface science of materials
- Experience in developing, applying and interpreting results of advanced physical measurement techniques. Specific experience in electron or scanning probe microscopy or synchrotron techniques is desirable.
- Critical analysis and communication skills demonstrated through research publications in peer reviewed journals
- In addition to strong laboratory experience in related research, the successful candidates should have demonstrated ability to work in a cross-disciplinary team and to communicate ideas and results effectively.
