The National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) is a world-renowned Department of Energy user facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). NCEM offers a highly unique Senior Scientific Engineering Associate opportunity to provide expert technical support for advanced electron microscopy. This role is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance and technical development of related and advanced instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply engineering/scientific concepts and practices in the area of electron microscope operation, development and coordination.
  • Develop/document training on microscope operation and techniques; organize periodic short training courses for students.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations including alignment, maintenance and upgrades of monochromated Zeiss Libra and other analytical electron microscopes.
  • Diagnose instrument malfunction and coordinate/direct technical repair personnel.
  • Educate scientific users on highly specialized techniques and advise/collaborate with users to optimize measurements for specific experiments.
  • Cross-train on other microscopes to support other user instruments as necessary, including Tecnai, Titan and JEOL in-situ microscopes.
  • Align, troubleshoot and tune advanced electron microscopes and accessories.
  • Critically evaluate scientific proposals for feasibility; design research plans and appropriate microscopy experiments to accomplish specific research objectives.
  • Independently research, evaluate and prioritize recommendations for equipment, software, and operations; advise management accordingly.

    Qualifications:
  • High level of technical/scientific knowledge for operation, design and development of new electron optical techniques in close consultation with staff scientists and facility users.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles of electron microscopy, x-ray microanalysis, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, electron diffraction theory, basic crystallography, phase diagrams
  • Extensive knowledge in the characterization of diverse materials, i.e., metals, ceramics, minerals, semiconductors, magnetic materials, polymers etc.
  • Experience with computer control and interface with scientific instruments
  • Experience with sample preparation for high resolution and analytical electron microscopy
  • Experience with maintenance and troubleshooting of electron microscopes and related equipment/systems
  • Experience conducting data and image analysis
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment with various levels of internal/external staff
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
    Desirable:
  • Experience with Gatan software for imaging and spectroscopy
  • Experience with CCD cameras, video recording, dynamic microscopy studies using cooling and heating stages
  • Understanding of vacuum systems and logic
  • Understanding of electronics and precision mechanics
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science or related field with materials characterization using advanced electron microscopes
  • Ability to evaluate research proposals

    Note: Must be able to help support late shift on TEAM microscope operation, as needed.
