Job Title:Chemist PD Fellow
Req Number:24692
Division:Physical Biosciences
Department:

SUMMARY
The postdoctoral candidate will be working in the field of biomass pretreatment, a process by which lignocellulose is made amenable to hydrolysis by hydrolytic enzymes. The pretreatment process engineering effort at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is centered on the use of ionic liquids, a class of solvents that have been found to be exceptional solvents for biomass. This position will employ chemical and biophysical characterization techniques to understand the effect of ionic liquid pretreatment on lignocellulosic biomass, with the goal of optimizing processing conditions and developing techniques for the recovery of the ionic solvents. The detailed characterization of biomass, before and after pretreatment, from a structural and chemical perspective is a critical element of the pretreatment process optimization effort.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential:

  • Design, conduct and supervise experiments focusing on the pretreatment of biomass with ionic liquids. Determination of the parameters required for the implementation and scale up of an ionic liquid process, such as thermodynamic properties and rheology. Develop material and energy balances for the entire pretreatment process, especially ionic liquid recovery.
Perform research in a collaborative manner in the context of processes upstream and downstream of pretreatment, including pretreatment of modified feedstocks, enzymatic digestion of pretreated biomass with and fermentation of biomass-derived sugars.

  • Design, conduct and supervise research lab procedures efficiently and with attention to necessary quality control procedures.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook (e-notebooks will be used) of all work performed and submit this information into an electronic database. Ensure that others can duplicate results.

Marginal

  • Periodically provide written reports and give oral presentations to discuss results and bottlenecks.
  • Supervision of technical staff, help with trouble shooting, and regular communication with principal investigator.

INSTITUTIONAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Environment, Health and Safety: Describe duties and responsibilities associated with both classification level and specific position.

EH&S: Employees must perform work in a manner that protects the health and safety of themselves, other employees, and the public, and preserves the quality of the environment by:

  • Completing required EH&S courses (identified by the Job Hazards Questionnaire or equivalent)
  • Analyzing workplace and environmental hazards
  • Implementing controls to reduce or eliminate hazards
  • Striving for continuous EH&S improvement

Supervisors have the additional responsibility to ensure all employees they supervise meet this expectation.
Workplace Environment:

Diversity: Employees at all levels of the organization are expected to work effectively within our diverse culture by promoting and supporting an environment in which all employees are valued, respected, and included. Managers and Supervisors have the additional responsibility to enhance this development by modeling and sustaining the commitment among team members and staff.

Supervisory positions: Describe duties and responsibilities associated with Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity in Personnel Actions.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:

  • Recent PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines
Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments independently, maintain appropriate records and manage data.
Strong personal, verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated track record of publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
Ability to work in a team environment and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues.

Marginal

  • Experience with biomass pretreatment and characterization
Experience with solid state and 2D NMR
Background in organic or organometallic chemistry
Background in ionic liquid synthesis and characterization
Experience with LC and GC mass spectrometry
Experience with rheology of viscous fluids or polymers
